Blindstone (Rise Above)

Release :2010  Genre : Hard/Heavy  Rock

Rise Above is Danish heavy blues rockers Blindstone's third album. They are a three piece band fronted by killer string bender and vocalist Martin J Andersen, Jesper Bunke on bass and drummer Anders Hvidtfeldt.
Compared to the band's second album "Freedom's Calling" which was an all-out super heavy blues rock feast, "Rise Above" sounds more refined and relaxed.
Don't worry, everything is relative and I can inform you that it's still a scorcher of an album full of amazing guitarplaying and groovy heavy riffs with a slight funky feel.
Their music is best described as a cross between Hendrix, Frank Marino, Robin Trower and perhaps a stench of King's X.

Ty Tabor (King's X) makes a guests appearance on the title track where he delivers a killer solo.
On Jimi Hendrix "House Burning Down" its time for another guest, Paul Halberg. That song is considered one of Hendrix toughest songs/jams to play but the two axe-players really has what it takes and makes it a thrilling listen.

If you haven't heard this band before do yourself a favour and check them out because they are truly great and deserves to be big. Start with the "Rise Above" CD but don't miss their previous two, "Freedoms Calling" (2008) and "Manifesto" (2008)

All three are out on Grooveyard Records, today's leading label for people in love with guitar-music.

Manfred Mann's Earthband - Concert Review

Date : 2010-02-25   Location : Stockholm - Debaser Medis

Just prior to Manfred Mann Earthband's premier gig on their 2010 European tour at Debaser in Stockholm drummer Jimmy Copely broke his leg. This could have proven disastrous but not this time. He was carried on stage with a plaster on his leg and did an amazing job.
Manfred Mann's Earthband has been around from many years and seen members come and go. Tonight's incarnation of the band included two original members, Manfred himself and Mick Rogers on guitar and vocals.

Over the years Manfred has built a career around re-arranging other peoples songs often with great success. One of them is Springsteen's "Spirits In The Night" that got the concert off to a fine start. "Martha s Madman" followed a couple of songs later and proved to be one of the evenings highlights.
Mick Rogers showed that he still knows his way around the guitar in addition to being a very good vocalist and extremely positive and likeable person.

About midway into the concert things started to sag with a for me unwanted cover of Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" plus some totally out of place 50's rock'n roll.
Ironically Mick Rogers informed us that it now was enough with covers and went straight into Dylan's "Father of Day, Father of Night" which received the evenings loudest cheer from the crowd. The Earthband's arrangement of that particular song plus "Mighty Quinn", with it's strong instrumental passages, epitomises when a cover version surpasses the original.

The evening was filled with good singing and playing and the crowd was pleased, but I feel that the band played it a little bit too safe. They should have skipped some of the pop-oriented songs in favour of material from their progressive period ("Solar Fire", "The Good Earth", "Nightingales & Bombers").

Verdict 3,5/5
